Hi everybody, Just wanted to introduce myself, and my (as of tomorrow) new family member, Buddy. He is 10 months old, and (I am sure this will be disputed) the handsomest Bassett boy around! I will add pics asap I wanted to thank EVERYONE involved in this website from the admins to the people who take the time to post this knowledge- it has become a source of education for me as I have read sooo much over the last week. I am a "newbie" to the bassett breed, and honestly, I haven't even had a dog as an adult, so HELP WELCOME here! The guys at petsmart were drooling worse than Buddy immediately after a drink when I walked in there this morning and said "I have a dog coming tomorrow.. . I need EVERYTHING! " (funny how much "free" dogs can cost! LOL) One of the first questions I have is this: IF there were one thing about Buddy I could change, it would be his name- we have friends with a dog named buddy, and this could become a problem. However, at 10 months old, he is pretty used to his name, and the LAST thing I would ever want to do is confuse him. I was wondering if using a "middle name" for a while would work, like Buddy Blank (the right name hasnt come to us yet), until he got used to that, and then dropping the buddy part... Am I naive? (be kind now, LOL) Please advise! thanks!

Welcome!
I have no idea about the name except to say that my cats answer to several different names. I would say that he would get used to being called Buddy ? Buddy is lucky to have you and I'm sure that you will fall in love in a short time.
I'm also new to the basset breed and I have to say that these people have helped me quite a bit. Boy have I leaned alot.
Looking forward to photos!

I am involved in rescue and many of the hounds we find homes for come with a name already, or some I'm sure had a name at one time, but we have no idea what it is. Their new owners usually rename them with no problem at all. If you want you could try the Buddy with the new name for a while and then drop the Buddy. I have found hounds will learn to adapt and if there is food and love involved it takes no time at all. Welcome and enjoy your new baby.

Thanks for joining us! A new baby! ahhh so sweet. We Need Pictures! ;D All I can say about the name is Hanna answers to Pudding, Pumkin, Sweety and Sugar just as well to Hanna. Harley don't answer to Harley! haha.. just kidding. Harley answers to duffus and doe-de-doe I know I'm mean and he will have "Issues" when he's older?

Hey everybody, thanks for alllll the welcoming!! Yesterday was the big day, Buddy, (a.k.a. gilligan, that's hilarious!!javascript:adds(" ")) is here and hounding it up! Yesterday was spent mostly outside learning all the smells of his new yard, with me hot on his trail -- did I actually think he was slow before??? aarrggh.. we ran the perimeter of our 8 acres SEVERAL times.. Phew!! .. but he now is familiar with where the bunnies and the gophers live, etc. and then was ready for a nap.(me too!!javascript:adds(" ")) Last night was a little rocky, he finally settled in for a good sleep, not exactly where I had planned, go figure, but he seemed awfully comfy on that pile of dirty clothes, LOL, so I followed the phrase "let sleeping dogs lie", and went to BED. He did well until 4 A.M. when he needed to go potty. At his old house this is when they got up for work. I am hoping he will slowly readjust his clock to match our schedule, even 6 would be GREAT.. but am wondering if I just permanently altered MY scjavascript:adds(" ")hedule?? After potty time, he figured it must be playtime... by the time he got calmed my husband had to get up for work and this started all over again. Then the kids got up, LOL.. now that (thankfully) they are all out of the house, Buddy has realized how much energy all that waking US up took and is (of course) taking a nap...I think I am about to do the same! I am sure we will have to run around the property at least a few times more today, and I am anxious about letting him out on his own. I did put a stake and cable down yesterday, just for potty time at night- the last thing I would like is to go on a bunny hunt at 4 A.M. in my bathrobe! Frank the Cat isn't exactly loving us right now, but is tolerating rather well... Buddy just goes down submissive when they meet. Frank however, (who is convince that he himself is a dog...) puffs up to twice his size, which when a cat weighs 15 pounds, this is quite an impressive sight!javascript:adds(" ") So far no major scuffles YET. uh-oh, nap time over... Question of the day... is antibiotic ointment ok to put on a dog? I have noticed a cut on his side. It is not deep but looks a little swollen and there is some pus there too.. he has a vet appt next week for the big "N" but I would like to do something about it so it doesnt get worse... any ideas let me know! Thanks again!

Wow! He sounds like a real character! We had that same problem with Lily when she got here. She would get up soooo early. You may want to think about crate training him even if you only use it at night for bed time. This will help you alter his schedule a little bit at a time. He shouldn't go in his crate and you can maybe increase by half hours. After he is on a schedule more to your liking, you can stop using it if you want but he may like it in there..lol. Also, you might want to not let him have any water after about an hour before he goes to bed and take him out one last time before he goes down.
I am not sure about the ointment, maybe some of the more experienced on here would know. I would think it would be ok to try it but if it doesn't start to look better in a day or so, make an early appt for the vet to take a look. You can also call your vet and sometimes the tech can answer those sorts of questions and save you a visit.
Enjoy Gilligan (no matter what you change his name to I will think of him as that! LOL) and keep us posted! Let us know if you decide to go ahead and change his name!

You can use Neosporin without worries, but I would keep an eye on it and get him to the vet if it worsens. Sounds as though you are in pupppy heaven. Get as much rest as you can he will keep you busy. I too think crate training is a wonderful tool. It will give you a safe place for him to be when you have to go out and leave him alone for a bit, not to mention the help with potty training. Here is a site with some good information on it www.perfectpaws.com/crt.htmlMost of all ENJOY your new puppy.

Thanks for the Neosporin tip- I know it's ok for cats, but you never know and better safe than sorry and all those phrases.. javascript:adds(" ") I thought about the crate training too... I do have a crate even with a bed that smells like his old house and foster doggy siblings- It is washable, and I wonder if it would be better to wash it than to have him smelling those things and getting "homesick" for them. He also doesn't seem happy unless he is in the same room as someone, so I am wondering if it would be a good idea to put the crate into somebody's (preferably one of my son's, LOL) bedroom. However, I don't want them to be up all night with him whining either. Any tips with starting him on this, like how to get him to settle without whining allllll night? (I hope I don't sound like he is driving me nuts.... I am in absolute puppy love, and am more worried about being a perfect houndmamma, LOL, than really anything else) I do however have to make sure my sons and husband, if not myself, get some sleep during this new time... spring break is next week for kids- should I wait? It seems like the sooner he learns all the rules the better for him long term, but who knows? I am sure my oldest son sustained some emotional scars along my way of learning parenthood, LOL, should I accept Buddigan (buddy+gilligan, LOL) will too? All this, just when I was confident with parenthood!!javascript:adds(" ") On a lighter note, the Kong is a Godsend.. I am soooo glad I read about them here! That was the only way I could get the boys' lunches made and get them out the door! He even was content to play with it a little after he had found the treat. Playful, or wondering if more treats would magically appear in there, LOL.. whatever, it works for me!!! Are you supposed to wash those things out every so often?

I would leave the bed with the smell for a little while. He will stop whinning eventually, he is just in a new place with new people and still not sure about it yet. I thought I made a huge mistake with Lily cuz she whined for a week strait when we first brought her home! . But she rarely does it anymore so it worked out. It is better if you can put the crate in someone's room at night. Just so they don't feel all alone. I actually kept Lily's in the living room and someone would stay up a little later so they would be there until she fell asleep. As far as the kong, I put Lily's in the dishwasher every time I ran it. Especially if you put peanut butter in it (which will keep him quiet for a LONG time..lol). Have fun and post some pictures when you can!

Just thought I would give an update... so far so good with Buddy... He is getting settled with his new family and we are starting to get to know his personality. What a crazy hound!! He seems to be happiest when napping belly (and everything else, LOL) up on the couch. He doesn't pay too much attention to Frank the Cat (which may mean he gets to keep his nose, as far as Frank is concerned) but he is SUCH a lover. If I walk by him without stopping for at least a 2 minute full body rub, he follows me until I do! I have to keep him chained when he goes out if we cant be with him as he has made all to good of friends with the dogs who roam the neighborhood, and I am afraid he will get lost (not to mention in trouble). BUT we go out with him a lot and let him get some good playtime in. I would say his prime motto would be "so many scents, so little time!" Woe to the bunny invading MY garden this spring!!";D" STILL working on pics.. good grief we need a digital!!

Congrats on your Buddy! Sounds like everything is falling nicely into place. Did you decide to keep the name, Buddy? We've had a couple of dogs with name changes over the years. When I was a kid, we got a 1 year old Irish Setter from a friend who didn't want her anymore. They called her Chicklet. We called her Heather. She never seemed to mind the change. Now my parents have a Basset that they named Betsy. For the first 14 months of her life, she was called Flower by her breeder. It took a couple of weeks for her to catch on, but now she's just Betsy. Right now, we keep our Gus on a doggie run chain. He can get to most of the yard, but that's it. I got tired of chasing him through the neighbor's yards every time he went out. Hopefully, we'll have a fence up in the next month, and he can safely and freely roam about.

Yeah, I guess the name Buddy will have to stay, as I can't seem to get the vote passed for any other of the names I have come up with (Stretch being my latest favorite!) As far as my hubby is concerned, "dang 'ole dawg" is his fave anyway (said with affection, LOL, you'd have to know him to get it I guess) And retraining the kids to use whatever name we could finally come up with would be a chore... I DO wish we could figure something else out though, I don't really care for his name. At the risk of not being politically correct here, it sounds a tad "suburbanish", and cutesy. I already heard that one of my neighbors DARED refer to him as an "anklebiter"....grrrrrr... That is a term reserved for chihuahuas and other yipyip dogs as far as I am concerned! They OBVIOUSLY have not had to lift him into their vehicle!!! SOOOOO, if ya think of any amazingly great names, let us know! Our cat's name is Frank, so I think something like Ralph, or George would fit well with that. I keep thinking of the looney toons where the wolf and the hound punch in at the time clock with their lunchboxes and say good morning before they begin their chase? Any body remember that? Seems like it was Frank and Ralph....

I forgot to add, Tiny, that I have seen all the pics of Gus (love that name too, by the way) and he is quite the handsome feller!!;D

Yup...it was frank and Ralph! LOL. He needs to have an appropriately old fashioned name. Seems to fit the Bassets better for some reason. I like Ralph! Maybe you should come up with a couple and post a poll! We would love to vote on that and you wouldn't have to go with the majority...it would just be fun! I still vote for Gilligan..heehee.
