Gus doesn't appear to have a touch of long-term separation anxiety, but he does seem to have some short-term, believe it or not. He's an angel when we go to work in the morning and he doesn't make a fuss if we go out to dinner. But if we go out to put out the garbage or something similar, he pitches a fit!
Tonight, I was taking the recycleables bucket from the backyard out to the curb. Gus came out with me, but couldn't come out to the curb with me. As soon as I rounded the corner of the house, he was barking and sort of howling. Instead of coming up the walk the way I had come, I walked around the other side of the house. There was Gus, going back and forth, sniffing where I had walked when I first left him. I said, "Hey silly!" He turned around and came running, but then turned back around and went back to where he was, apparently trying to see where I had gone.
We both went into the house, and he cried and whined and finally went back to the door. He immediately went back to where he thought I should have come back.
So... I went back into the house, out through the front door, and went back to the backyard the way I "should" have in the first place. That seemed to appease Gus.
I think my dog is a little neurotic.

That is so cute. Poor Gus! I know what you mean though. Lily only whines and cries if we are still in the house and she is in her crate! She is soooooooo loud. And as soon as we get back and open the door, she starts up again. I know she doesn't do it when we are gone because I have snuck around the side of the house to listen for her and nothing.

That sounds all too familiar. My three aroo when I leave and aroo when I come home. They also aroo when hubby's truck pulls up. Neurotic? Nope just a good basset.
