Somewhere along the way, I read that it was good to hand feed your hounds to show them that it was when they had company at the food bowl (we have 2 cats) I have done just that. I will hand feed Lexie at least one meal each day. NOW, she will sit in front of her bowl and will nudge my hand. Have I taught her that she can only eat from my hand? Hubby comes home for lunch everyday and puts food in the bowl (he doesn't feed her from his hand) and when I get home---it's still there. Now What?

Trust me she will not starve herself. She will eat when she is ready hand fed or not.

Hand feeding is an EXCELLENT tool and kudos to you for using it for bonding and teaching that all food comes from YOU! Lily also got a bit dependant on hand feeding once a day. Instead, now,I have taught her to "earn" her food by following a command before I put her bowl down. Like, Sit, Down, Shake, or something like that. When she would still leave her food bowl untouched, I would pick it up after 15 minutes and not give it back until it was time for another meal. She eventually figured out that if she didn't eat it when it was served, she would have to wait for it.
Joann is absolutely right! She won't starve herself.

That is great advice Betty---thank you. I had to work this morning and hubby didn't sooooo I was the one that let Lexie out to potty. I put her food in her bowl but didn't have any extra time to hand feed her. I left her alone and went to get ready and when I came back---it was gone!!! Usually this is the meal that I feed her so I was surprised that she got tired of waiting and ate without me. My baby is growing up.
