As all of you know, this is my first basset baby. Everything that I have read says that can have a odor to them. I have not experienced that odor becuase about one week after we brought Lexie home, we gave her a bath. I read somewhere that you can shampoo them once a month and give them a warm water bath each week. That is exactly what I have done for the last 8 weeks. Tonight, I shut us up in the bathroom and Lexie went right over to the tub and stood on her back legs wanting in the water. She really doesn't mind her bath time. Afterwards, we trim toe nails, if they need it or not just so she will get used to the idea and not fight me on it. My question is, how do the rest of you handle baths and am I doing it to often? I do use a good shampoo that I got from the vet that is not supossed to dry out her skin.

Well first off it sounds like you are right on track with getting her use to the bath and getting her nails trimmed. Nothing worst then a 60lb Basset refusing to get their nails trimmed!
Baths you can get by every other week if you're worried about it by keeping a box of "Baby wipes" next to the couch. Then once a day I give mine a good wipe down using about two wipes per dog. And I use them in their ears as well. I've never had a problem with their ears or odor! And they LOVE the time I spend rubbing them!

Sounds as though you have a wonderful plan of action in place. I don't bathe mine that often. In fact today was bath day and they are NOT speaking to me tonight. Now toenails are another matter. Linus is wonderful, Ben puts up with it, but Sadie's must be trimmed by the vet and it takes three of us to hold her down. They are all different and have different needs.

Hope they don't have pistols under them ponchos! haha.. Still love that picture!
I should start a post on the Funniest Basset Outfits! Of course I would have to wait till Betty finishes Harley & Hanna's outfits for the Renaissance Faire? But Of Course!

Oh please do. I have Linus as the Duke, as in John Wayne, and Sadie as a beautiful bride. Ben hasn't been with us long enough to suffer the costume photos yet, but he will learn.

Living in hot humid Miami, Florida, George can get pretty stinky, pretty fast. I can usually go two weeks but in the summer he gets a bath almost every weekend. I have never had any skin problems from bathing too often. I use some oatmeal doggie shampoo I get at Petsmart and I always use a little of my Herbal Essence Conditioner on him for the finishing touch. Makes him really soft and smells so good. As for the nails!! Forget about it!!! George is so bad that now the vet knocks him out with a reversible sedative. So that $8.00 nail trim winds up being about a $50 manicure! Have to take him about every 3 months for that. You're smart that you've started early with the nail trimming - wish I had!!

Baby wipes, huh? Do you use them in the ears also? Lexie did have a yeast infection in one of her ears when we got her so out vet lady has suggested using a ear wash bath every week. She would rather have her nails clipped that her ears washed. Thanks for the info on the wipes, I will try that!

Yeah, I have to give Lillian a bath about once a week now that it is getting hot here in FL. She hates it! She will cry and try to jump out of the tub the entire time. I don't know what I am going to do when she gets big!! I normally give her one every two weeks but will go longer if I can. In between I use a damp cloth with a tiny bit of baby oil on it to wipe her down. I got that tip from someone on another board but don't remember who....The vet always comments on how pretty her coat is. We take her every two weeks for a nail trimming at the vet. We have been doing it since she was 8 weeks and she still hates it. I can't get her to sit still to do it myself at home.

I have the help of my husband but since you don't, I'm sure it would be difficult. I catch her when she in on her back and Kelly will feed her as many pieces of food it takes to trim all of them. FINALLY, I'm doing something right!

You are making it fun for her that is for sure with all of those treats!! LOL. I tried treats and she would just try to get the treat and get away with it..lol. The only thing that she doesn't mind is ear cleaning. She will lay still for that one. Good thing too cuz I usually clean them a couple of times a week inside and almost every day at the tip.

we do the baby wipe thing at our house too...they think they are some evil creation from the depths of hell. baths... if you are in the tub you want out...if you are out of the tub you want in. ears, once a week with an ear cleaner from the vet. toenails...cloe lets me do hers, not a problem. emma has a fit. i have tried rubbing her feet and toes and not trimiming to get her used to it. but i can rub her feet all day, but the minute she sees the trimmer she is gone. usually my husband holds her and we trim one foot, let her go and then at another time trim the next foot, ect.
