I have been doing a LOT of reading about crate training.. (btw, thanks goes out to southernbassetts.com for all KINDS of great info, including the crate training tips) here's the rub: My new owner (as it appears I already know my place here, LOL) is still sooort of a puppy at 10 months old. I think the crate training is going to have to be the way of it for us, as we travel often and want him to be at his best no matter where we go. I am just wondering if he is too old to make this all work, or if it is still possible?
On another note, at his old house Buddy was allowed all over the furniture and wherever else he wanted to be. As much as I love him, I would just as soon not have my couch smell like hound dog. LOL. How do I break it to his sweet little self that it's just NOT ok? (Yes I realize if he is not crated while we are out, he will still snooze there- wouldn't YOU? LOL) I am looking for my guests to not have to shove a dawg outta the way to sit!

Well, it is never too old to crate train! You should go about it just as if he were a bitty baby. As far as jumping on the furniture, I gave that up a long time ago. Now, i just put a throw on the loveseat and have designated it as Lily's. I just tell her off when she jumps on anything else and it works wonderfully. I can wash the throw so the furniture doesn't smell bad. As far as guests.....chances are he won't be sleeping if someone new comes in. More than likely he will be trying to get belly rubs..lol. I am sure that others can give advice on how to keep them off of the furniture entirely.
Good luck!

I agree entirely with Betty. Crate training can begin at any age. We encourage our new owners of recued bassets to try this from the get go.
As far as getting on the furniture. Mine are kind enough to let us sit on it once in a while. My philosophy is "love me, love my dogs" It's their home and if you are afraid of a little dog hair........ there's the door. This will give you the chance to see who your real friends are. ;D

Do it now---trust me it is wonderful when you need a moment away from the pup. In the beginning, I felt like I was punishing Lexie and now I know that she likes her own space. She still doesn't go in on her own but doesn't fuss about it either. I'm like you, I would rather Lexie not be on the furniture and so far, she only gets to get in the chair that my dad sits in when she goes to visit. It's funny that she know this too. FEBREZE, it's a wonderful thing!

ROFLMAO!!!!! Now THAT is one Bassett who has mastered crate training!!! Thanks for the tips.. maybe I will have the courage to be a "mean mamma" for a while, to make it a better life for all of us. I just haven't gotten up the nerve yet- Why I don't know.. I trained all 3 of my human boys to sleep away from me when they were younger than this dog!!! Those sad eyes just KILL me.. I know I am doomed if I don't do this, and soon! I am sure the reference to that old 70's song "Sad Eyes" has been made a MILLION times, but I since I personally havent seen it, I had to make note of it! Praying for courage....

Ohmygosh Betty...that is precious! And look how big Lillian is getting! She is adorable.
I think Baloo thought I was the meaniest momma in the world when we first crated her. She would cry and cry and cry...sometimes for hours. Talk about hard! It's almost worse than getting your kid to sleep through the night! But now she does beautifully, and many times we actually have to wake her up in the morning she is soooo comfortable.
She's getting older now though and is smarter than we think. Every night (as she is curled up on the couch with everyone watching TV)...she knows it is getting close for her time to get in the crate. She starts by givining a MAJOR stink eye to everyone...then if you go near her she lets out a little tiny bark...then if you pick her up she lets out a big bark -- never bites or is agressive...but Baloo definitely lets you know she would prefer to sleep on the couch. It is hilarious, because "stink eye" starts at almost the exact time every night!
But, once in her crate she is fine. It took her longer than usual to get used to it...but I am glad I was strong!!!
Good luck!!
