Well, I knew that Lily had started to drool a bit but last night she actually had a string of it that went all the way to the ground. YAY!!! Also her howl has matured nicely, she has a beautiful singing voice! My baby is growing up!
I think we are all nuts to think this stuff is so wonderful. Most people think it is a pain, but with a Basset, you gotta love it!

Yes you have too!
There's nothing more beautiful then when the sun glimmers off that drool as they shake their heads and the graceful sprays of Basset Love sail through the air at incredible distances!

You two are excited about this and I dread the day. Actually, Lexie has not started to howl yet. Her bark does sound more like an older dog though.

Of course I love it! ;D These are things that really set our pups apart from the "pack". I really enjoy all of the houndie things that Lillian does. If I didn't like the drool or the howl, I coulda got a lab Don't get me wrong, I love labs too but they are no Bassets. Seriously, I do think the key to the howl at least, is for them to learn "quiet". You can teach that as soon as they learn to bark and it is really useful for late at night, early mornings, and when it is just out of control. I do love to let her get a good howling or barking in because after all she is a hound, but there are times when it can be too much. As far as the drool, well, my cat has been drooling on me for 6 years and it never bothered me..lol. Yes, a cat that drools. I think he is a Basset at heart! He only drools when you pet him just right and when he is very happy and content.

I love it when Bassets decorate the bridge of their nose with a frothy string of slobber. Gus doesn't howl much yet. I keep hoping he'll give up his barking for a nice howl. Our last Basset had the most melodious howl I've ever heard. Gus mostly just barks. Gwynie appears to be a mute. No barks, no howls, only an occasional grunt. Betsy only gives 1 or 2 sharp barks when someone comes to the house. We are trying everything to get Gus to howl. We bought a didgeridoo, but he just runs out of the room when we play it. We play a wolf howling cd, but he just c-ocks (did that switch to "thingees"?) his head this way and that. We howl at him, but he just gives us that, "You're insane" look. I want some howlin'!

How funny---just yesterday when we took Lexie to play with her sister I noticed this white strink of "Stuff" across her nose. This was the first time that I had ever seen it. I finally realized after seeing that her sister had it too that it was slobber from where they were so excited to see each other.

my husband corrects me on this term "drool" he swears we must always call it "hooch" LOL... Buddy(aka gilligan, stretch.. etc) is just starting to have a little drool, er HOOCH going on.. as far as the howls, is this something they grow into? so far he is pretty quiet most of the time- other than the way HE grunts when I struggle to move his heavy little self offa me, LOL or when he whines to go out. I dont like to encourage whining, but the way his jowls puff out when he does it is just tooo derned cute!! (the crowd says "awwwwwww", LOL)javascript:adds(";D")

Lily started to howl when she was about 4 months. It wasn't very mature and would crackle a lot. She would do it when I was in my room on the computer and we were seperated by the baby gate. She could see me but couldn't get to me. Now she only does it when we sing or howl at her. Oh, and every now and then when a cat is sitting somewhere that she can't reach him . Whining is cute but kinda annoying . We have this huge ottoman in the living room that we use as a coffe table. Well, Avery has been sleeping on the couch because it is spring break and he is staying up really late. This morning she jumped up on the ottoman and howled and whined at Avery to get up and play with her.

We have absolutely no drool yet...wil it come? The only time Mowgli drools is when she has to get in the car...then there are buckets!
But, they both howl and it is sooo funny to hear them. Mowgli has a very deep howl and Baloo and tiny, hihg-pitched one.

Gus is a MAJOR whiner. It does get annoying. But I guess it's better than the screaming bark he used to do as a puppy. The night we brought him home, he screamed during the ENTIRE 1.5 hour car ride!

The day we picked him up, the breeder said, "Gus has become rather vocal in the past 2 weeks. That's him now." And all you heard was his screams. I'm so glad he just whines now.
