My husband has been saying for a while that Gus's nose is going to get the best of him and he's going to regret it. Well, yesterday, I was sitting in here, doing something on the computer. Suddenly, I heard a "Yipe!" followed by a "BAD DOG!", and then in runs Gus, with his tail between his legs. I went out to see what the commotion was, only to see a plate and most of a tuna sandwich on the floor and a husband with a really pissed off look on his face. He said, "Gus's teacher said that we'd never keep him from counter surfing unless we caught him in the act. Well, I caught him in the act. He was so intent on getting my sandwich, that he never heard me come up behind him." Then he shook his head and rolled his eyes. Poor Gus... And here he thought he was getting himself a real treat.

Thank goodness Lily isn't tall enough to counter surf *yet*. She sure does try though! I just push everything to the back of the counter that might smell good to her. I am sure the day will come when I don't expect it and I will lose dinner or something..LOL. Poor Gus! Well, he will learn next time to make sure the humans are occupied somewhere else..LOL.

Gus is the first dog I've ever had that tried to get stuff off of the counter. My fear is that he will try to get something off of the stove and really hurt himself.

Norton "kitchen-table-surfs" - we've learned to keep food off the table! We foolishly thought he wouldn't be able to reach it - he's certainly not tall enough to reach a table. Then one day I caught him with his front paws balanced on a chair and his long nose wolfing down the kids' leftover chicken nuggets!

The odd thing is that Gus won't try to take anything off of the coffee table, which is right at nose level for him. He can rest his head on the table without any of his feet coming off the ground. We've left food on there before and he ignores it. I don't know why he's started jumping up on the counter.

Maybe he figures the stuff you keep out of reach is better than what you will leave on the coffee table?? LOL. I don't know but sure sounds to me like he is a true basset..LOL.

LOL, sorry about the tuna, but tooo funny!!! Buddy (for lack of better name, LOL) has shown tendencies to sniff lovingly into the air whenever there is food around....He has trained us VERY well over the pas week to not leave food out! My kitchen has never been cleaner! So far he hasn't snatched anything, but we are trying out hardest not to leave temptation out for him to battle. I am sure it's only a matter of time though. He doesn't beg much at mealtimes, but takes his post under the table, and let's just say I don't have to sweep under the kids' chairs after dinner!! I am surprised that he doesn't try to get into the trash though.. it is one of those covered tall ones, but is next to the counter, where if he wanted to bad enough, he could do it easily. Must be he prefers the fresh fixin's from under the table and is unwilling to stoop to scrap lows, LOL!

Watch out for that trash! He might not have figured out that he can open it yet and when he does, watch out! ;DLily knocked it over one day and the lid popped off. She didn't eat anything but it was scattered all over the kitchen floor. She hasn't done it since then, but I expect it to happen. If it does, I am moving it to the laundry room..LOL.

So far, so good on the trash here. Though, if we throw anything in there that we think Gus will likely want, we usually wrap up the bag and take it outside. His nose might get him into trouble sometimes, but I have no complaints about my Gus. He's just the most loveable guy. I've been dead with this cold for the past few days. I got ready for work this morning and then thought, why bother? I feel like I'm moving in slow motion, so I knew I wouldn't do anyone at work any good and I'd just be spreading germs around. Well, Mr Gus keeps coming in and checking on me. He'll stare at me, which he doesn't usually do unless I've got food. I guess he knows something isn't quite right. He's been jumping up for more hugs than usual and he hasn't been pestering me to play, even though I know he's bored out of his mind. I really do love my little guy.
