I have learned in the past few weeks of being owned by my bassett, Buddy (aka gilligan, aka stretch, aka ralph, aka rufus...the list goes on!) that the only thing in the world that he would rather please than me is, well, his nose. We are working on yard training him (we have app. 8 acres, a fence, unless anyone is offering to buy, is unobtainable) If we are out with him I try to keep him off leash as much as possible. The other day he was doing really well. Then the dog next door came to play. She is, well, a bad influence to say the least!! But he enjoys his time with her soo much, and since he came from a home with other dogs, it is hard on him sometimes being an only now I think. ANYway... he is playing dog tag with her and all, and then they TAKE OFF!!! He went out into an area of our land that is marshy this time of year. That's when he saw the bunny- They were chasing so hard he even went ACROSS A CREEK!!! I was sure he would NEVER do this because of his fear of the water. He had always stopped there before, but I think he was just so into it he didn't realize what he was doing till it was done. While over on the other side, he went directly to the adjacent farmers field which was FRESHLY covered in manure!!! Thankfully he didn't roll, but due to his stature, well, whatever Buddy's feet go through, his belly drags in it too!!
So, all this time, my husband and oldest son are yelling for him to come back. He finally goes back to the creek, but will NOT cross it!! He now remembered his fear!!! So my husband had to stay out there and keep his attention, while I hopped in the truck and drove around the block to the other side, knocked on the neighbors door to introduce myself (and AWOL Hound, LOL) and explain why I would be spending time in their backyard.... I finally got him, and had to lift his manure covered self into the back of the truck (cause he was NOT getting in the front this time!)
and haul him home, where I had to touch his manure covered self AGAIN to get him out!!! Did I mention this happened right as dinner was on the table?? Roll Eyes So after washing up and re-heating my dinner (he had to wait on cable til I did that, so I could regain some patience, LOL) he had his first bath. He decided he was still afraid of the water at that point, but between my husband and I we got him clean.
As a post script., I will add that after being "grounded" for a few days, he has done very well since. We got a little nervous last night when he was out by the creek but he never got too close. We don't EVER plan on leaving him out like that without supervision, he would've been gone forever!!
I read on another thread about tethering indoors for potty training... I have been working with him a lot on the leash out doors, thinking he will get used to just sticking around the humans. I let him off for a little, and keep calling him when he is fairly close, and give him treats if he comes. I have been letting him farther away gradually, and it seems to work for the most part...but maybe it's just coincidence, any tips anybody?
