Gus gave his first real howls tonight, which, obviously, sent my husband and I into gales of laughter. Gus didn't seem all that amused.
I don't know what his problem was, but he kept whining. Gus is kind of whiney anyway, so we did what we usually do when he whines for no apparent reason. We whined back at him. Usually he just whines more, but this time, he let out a long, mournful, "AWOOOWooowooowooo." Everytime he'd whine, he'd give us another. It was finally too much for us, so I called my dad and said, "Listen to this!" Gus obliged with another long, sad, "Awooowooowooo." My dad seemed as tickled as we were. ;D

How funny! Lexie hasn't figured out how to howl. So far, all she does is bark and bark and bark and bark some more.

Betsy gives her warning bark when someone enters the room, but that's it. Gwynie hardly barks at all. She barked a couple of times at Gus the last time we were there, and that was the 1st time I had ever heard her bark!

We have at least on howl fest every night. We too start with whining ourselves and then they start in. Hubby thinks it's especially funny to get them going when I am on the phone. I on the other hand do NOT!!!!

That Buddy of mine is the howl-KING!! He uses it regularly, but especially in the morning when the two older boys go to school. He gets right up in my face and howls away, then runs to look out the window, and comes back and repeats.... He is obviously expressing how appalled he is that two of his most faithful slaves dare go outside without them and even have the nerve to actually leave the premises! Just when he was getting used to it a little bit, spring break came around and he forgot. Now this week he has had to relearn their schedule, but it seems harder for him. I think he thought he finally had them trained to stay home!! I mean, really, WHO is in charge here?;D

Well, Buddy is of course! Geesh, haven't you learned that by now! Just kidding . I LOVE the howl. It is one of my very favorite things about Bassets. It is such a lovely, soulful sound and every time Lily does it I have to laugh! She likes to do it when the baby plays her toy piano or when I am in my room on the puter with the baby gate between us. I also love the way that Bassets are so vocal. I know that at least Lillian makes different noises for different things. Groans, squeeks, etc. It is like she is talking to me.
