Since spring is somewhere around the corner (I'm so sick of rain) I need to be thinking about how to treat for fleas. I believe it was Betty that mentioned something about tropical treatment and cats. My vet lady said I could use Advantage without it hurting my cats but my question is, what do I do about ticks? My BIG concern is, I am being treated for Lyme disease myself and want to make sure Lexie doesn't get it. I know from experience how it feels but I'm not sure how it affects dogs. I have been on medication for 3 years and probably had it for atleast 5 years before I was diagnosed. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I think Frontline and Advantage do fleas AND ticks. I usually use advantage, but went brain dead last year and got Frontline. They both have worked equally well for us. Remember we have no ticks to speak of here. Neither dowe have catz. I gave that up years ago

Well, I still use frontline for Lily, I am just SUPER cautious about keeping the cats away from her and where she sleeps and lounges for a couple of days and wash her bedding so that they won't come in contact with it. I have been thinking of switching but don't want to put anything in her system that I don't have to and I might be wrong (I often am! ) but I would think something internal would be worse on her system than something topical. Also, if you are in a tropical zone, or in a place where mosquitos are prevelant, PLEASE use heartguard all year long! In some areas up north, it isn't necessary to use it during the winter months. But for us that are in mosquito country it should be mandatory!

I went ahead and ordered Andvantage since it's safe if my cats were to come in contact with it. I ordered from Drs Foster and Smith. They seem to have the lowest price and even beats the vets office. As for the heartguard, we use it every single day!!!! I try to be a good mommy!

We just came back fromt he vet. Norton was given Revolution for fleas and heart worm prevention. we go back in a month to buy the 3 month supply. Then the vet said that the heartworm prevention shot was given every 6 months. Is it really necessary to constantly prevent heartworms? angie

Well, Angie...YES! Especially in the summer months. Now, if you live in the northern states where the winters are freezing, you can do without in the winter and many people do. However, when the first sping thaw happens, then you really need to re-start it right away. Heartworms and the treatments to get rid of them are horrible on dogs. They can die from the worms AND the treatment. The very best thing I can tell you is that you should do it all year long no matter what and if in doubt, talk to your vet. You can probably find them on-line cheaper than at the vet's office. My vet is very reasonable so I just buy from him, but I am sure that some here will be able to point you in the right direction to order cheaply online.
