I was a complete idiot today and opened my car door to shut the gate with Elvis on his leash. Being an opportunist off he went.
I live in a pretty rural area with an arroyo running through the properites. The fences and arroyo weren't a problem for Elvis, but I just couldn't keep up with him. I also had my blue heeler and border collie following me as I tried to keep track of Elvis through the white of his tail.
He finally turned around and came back down into the arroyo and I thought he was going to come back up to me (I had a leash by this time) but some little critter got his attention and off he went down the arroyo. I ran back to my car to try and get to the point where the road crosses the arroyo before he did. I got there, but couldn't see him. At this point I was right by my house so I drove like a madwoman to get the other dogs in the gate and get some treats to lure Elvis back.
doG was watching out for me because when I got back to the arroyo crossing there is Elvis coming around the bend. By this point the heat (95) had gotten to him so he was moving slowly. I corralled him and he is peacefully taking a puppy nap. I am trying to get my heart to stop pounding!
What an afternoon.

Ok, what is a arroyo ? Please take pics of your area I well never get to see it and I want to see it.... I'm so glad you caught him, when the dogs escape to the front of the house they scare me to death...Grace when she was a pup ran out behind me and I didn't see her ,went to mailbox and looked behind me and she had followed me and a van was coming and I ran in front of it to get her...they put on there brakes and nearly hit me...Jim saw this and yelled at me ... person in van said a few un nice things too..so you could say ,I would give my life for her and mean it...makes my heart pound just thinking about it ...I know how scared you were..

I was going to ask the same question. lol He was being a naughty pup, shame on him The best thing about bassets is when they pull stunts like that, it does not take long before they tired and slow down. I'm glad everything turned otu ok and he was safely caught.

You wouldn't believe how proud he is of himself. The little s**t hasn't shown an ounce of remorse! Not that I expected it....
