Going over my guestbook on my web site I found the following posted in the guestbook. It makes me terribly sad that people can speak out of hast! So if anyone thinks that breeding puppies makes one money have a look! Not all raise spending what we do but a good breeder should do most!!
Post found.......................
According to your website this is "Our 1st litter in three years!!" and yet your posts on the Drool say Oct 30, 2003 "Hope just turned Five this year.....she mothered three litters of puppies" Now if you do the math, this means you bred Hope 3 times before the age of 2 and this is her 4th litter before the age of 6. Many times you have posted of your medical difficulites, pleas for help financially, inability to do everyday tasks, lenghty hospital stays and yet you take on the responsiblity of 8 puppies. How can this be construed as anything but a litter to make money? You state "The Glaucoma issue is not even clear..." then why would you run the risk of bringing puppies into the world with a genetic history of glaucoma, from their grandmother? Wouldn't a responsible breeder decide not to take the risk? Why would you want to bring these wonderful bundles of joy into the world with the possiblity of developing glaucoma and putting the future owners thru the heartbreak that you experienced with Lindsey. I would love to see your answer to these posts, assuming you allow this comment to stay on your website. Lee
JH's SADSACK BASSETS RESPONSE!!!!!!
Lee, Just going through my guestbook post and to answer your question! and Hope will be 6 in June this year and this is her 3rd litter. So the math works! About the Glaucoma issue do you breed? Have you done genetic research? Do you spend alot of money and time ( not just people's words looking into genetics, profiles, medical issues) can you tell me that you have discussed these issues witha vet and also genetic professionals? When and if you can tell me that you have done all of these things and have the backing of medical professionals then maybe we should talk. I am very satisified with all the genetic testing, the medical professionals advice and the advice of the vets and specialist that we have gotten. They go to school, study and do research on these issues not just repeat hear say! I have had a horrible year with medical issues and it has been a very devistating and difficult year. Pleas for financial help??? I have never ask for fincial help other than for a fellow drooler (Barb for whcih I got alot of critisim) I have donated items to rescues to raise money and I have helped when I could. I have maybe posted about or trials and tribulations as a basset family but never pleaded for money!
I have happily and very well taken care of this wondeful litter of 8 puppies ( at times it was tough medically bit it gave me great courage) all puppies were placed in their new homes and as far as a money maker hmmmmm lets see how rude you can be!

Hummm that adds up to $3713.63 not counting
Additional electric bill for heating pads, washing machine, dryer ( for puppy laundry) & keeping the house warm enough!
Additional water bill for laundry!
Additional Laundry detergent
Long distance phone calls to the puppy buyers x's many times!
Gas money to & from the vet!
Not to mention all the money for cleaning supplies to keep the puppy pen clean and germ free,
And our time wether mine, my husbands, our friend Betty's, our friends that helped our time is never paid for other than the enjoyment of the puppies!
As far as the purpose for the litter, I was suppose to come home better than I did when hospitalized for the 6 weeks in Nov & Dec. Lindsey was going to be leaving us and my hubby and the vets discussed the issue of raising a litter. A good breeder brings a litter here when they are looking to add to their home. So it was done to carry on Lindsey's line and all of you that spouted off about Lindsey's Glaucoma it was not the inhertiable type. Sooo when the decision was made to raise a litter, I raise them to be in the best of health, strong and spend a great deal of money making sure that it is done properly! If that means we must rob peter to pay paul, do without something, hubby works overtime actually this time he took on a third job to help cover the expenses, that's what we do.
Oh yes and I for got...... we claim our dog breeding so we must also pay UNCLE SAM taxes on the income!
So to say we did this to make a profit, it just shows that I am speaking to someone that has no idea what it takes to raise a healthy litter of puppies properly as a good breeder!
Do all breeders raise this way, likley no but this is the way of JH's Sadsack bassets!
