First of all, this is my first post to this forum, so hi everyone!
Second of all, I have a beautiful bassett that's almost 18 months old. It took a long time to get her housebroken as she was originally litterbox trained. We decided to go the way of crate training and it has worked wonderfully until now. We keep her in a kennel during the day while we are at work (but she is let out of her kennel for about an hour at lunch time) and she is kept there overnight as her stomach is very irritable and she tends to throw up when she eats anything that isn't her regular dog food (and she does try when no one is looking!). She has recently taken up to using the bathroom in her kennel overnight and has gone through several blankets and pads that we have put down in there for her. There haven't been any changes to her schedule and we've decided that it's probably just be some form of "teenage rebellion" if you will but needs to be stopped immediately as it's not healthy for any of us. Does anyone have any suggestions on why she is doing this and on how to curb the problem? Her kennel is not huge, but it is not tiny either.. It is also used as her safe haven when she is tired or skittish around people and is not used for punishment. We are thinking of buying a smaller kennel, but don't want to have to do that as they're fairly expensive and it may be unneccessary if this is only a temporary problem. Should we just start from the beginning all over again and put a divider in her kennel?
