Sampson started limping on his left back leg lastnight. I doesn't look swollen and I check between the pads of his foot and coudn't find anything. I will take him to the vet this afternoon. Does anyone have any suggestion what it could be? [ My Tucker has been doing the same thing for a couple of days, we already had an appt on friday for a recheck of his ears and skin so I guess we'll be looking into this too now. I've been working so I haven't been able to make sure he's resting it. He's about 2 yrs old so I don't think it would be pano, plus it's his left rear leg and I thought pano mostly affected the front legs. He's still happy as can be and playful although not as much as normal. He eats and drinks fine, and will walk on it but with a pronounced limp. When he stands still he lifts it off the ground a few inches and will even kind of stretch it out behind him. Plus when he sits down he usually sits on that leg so I'm pretty clueless as to what is going on. I've checked his pads, and in between his toes and there doesn't seem to be any spot in particular that is painful. So far he's had 2 aspirin but I'm not noticing any improvement yet. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be wrong?? I'd love to have some idea so I can ask the vet the right questions and be more informed about my baby. He and Rosie are my first bassets and I've only had them since Jan 8th so I'm still a real newcomer to the wonderful world of bassets and have lots to learn. Thanks for any and all help or ideas. Cindy

It may just be growing pains. Sophie will limp for a couple of days at a time and then she will be fine again. Does Tucker sleep in a strange position? Sometimes that will set Sophie off to limping. She'll sleep with her bottom half "normal" and then the top part of her body will twist over as if she wants to lay on her back. I don't see how it can be comfortable for her, but she seems to like it! Sorry, got a bit sidetracked. It really may be just a cramp or growing pains. Sophie doesn't always limp on her front legs, sometimes it's her back legs and she just sorta drags it behind her or she'll try to run/hop on 3 legs. It makes me sad to watch her, but she doesn't really seem to be in any real pain as she's always playing around. We try to keep her calm and pet her more instead of throwing things for her to go get. I'm sure I'm not much help. Let me know what the vet says.

I just put Tucker on his back and did some more investigating and his skin on the inside of the leg does look darker than the other side so maybe he pulled a muscle or something and bruised it, he also seems to be more tender when I mess around on that area. I'm gonna try putting an ice pack on it for a while tonight and tomorrow when I get home from work and see if that helps any. I'm sure I'm just being a paranoid momma, but I hate to see him like this and after losing both of my previous dogs to the bridge in December I'm soo scared that something serious will be wrong and I can't go through that again right now. As for your question he doesn't sleep funny, he usually curls up in a ball or stretches out on his bed (after moving the blankets around to his liking) I will definately keep you updated and appreciate your input, it has helped put my mind at ease Cindy

Try to keep him quiet for the weekend and see how it is on Monday. Ask your Vet if you can have him benedry to keep him quiet and resting for the weekend.

We just got back from the vet, Tucker will be on Deramax for the next 2 weeks and then will have a recheck and x-ray if it's not improved. But, she thinks it may be a torn anterior cruciate ligament (acl) based on what I told her and the fact that a couple of days on aspirin didn't improve anything. I really hope it's not since she said the surgery to correct it will be about $3000 (which I don't have). The poor little guy has been through enough already after getting turned into rescue by his first owners, luckily he and his sister are here with me now and I am definately in it for life!
Sling lots of drool and wish us luck.

Hang in there. If you do need the surgery there are web sites where you can post your situation and people donate through the site to pay for the surgery. Keep us all posted. In the meantime I will try to remember the web site.

Thank you so much for your help, and I'm anxious to get that web address. If I don't need to use it I'd sure like to help out someone else as soon as I can.
Tucker has had 2 rounds of the Deramax so far and his limp is not nearly as bad as it was, he's also not holding the foot up while standing as much and instigated a play session with Rosie earlier (which I stopped so he could rest his leg) so I'm hoping that it won't be the ligament, but still very afraid that it will be, but only time and x-rays will tell.

Poor Tucker! I hope that it doesn't turn out the be a torn ACL. We're slinging buckets of drool. Please keep us posted on how he's doing.
