Great Site! Glad to know about it. I am a new Basset mom and I have LOTS to learn as I've never raised a puppy before and I think we might have a pretty stubbrn (but adorable!) one on our hands! Our little Daisy is 4 months old and we are not doing wonderfully with housebreaking. She seems to know where I want her to go, but sometimes "forgets" and just goes in the middle of the living room - thank goodness for tile floors!!
We had to start with paper training inside because it turned out she was sick when we got her (she is fine now!) and the vet didn't want her outside at all. So...now we are trying to shift the from the paper to outside. She mostly seems happy to go outside, but how do I teach her to 'tell' me she needs to go. I saw something on here about a bell. That sounds great - how do I do it?
Other questions - she has started shedding a lot. I know bassets do, but is it seasonal or is it just like this all year? When we first got her she didn't seem to be doing it so much. Could she be shedding baby hair? Just wondering. It isn't a problem - I just like to know what's happening.

It takes time. Lexie is 5 months old and has just in the last 2 weeks started having less accidents in the house. She still doesn't tell me when she has to go out. Our only clue is she runs around the den like a wild woman on fire. Pay attention to Daisy and you will begin to notice when it time to do business!
This is my first puppy too and everone on this site has taught me alot about being a mommy!!

I believe all our hounds are shedding more right now as they are losing their winter coats, but bassets shed all the time. We put in laminate flooring in our living area and I swear I could build a basset from the hair that is swept up in a week's time. As far as potty training... read the thread "a little discouraged." You may find some help there. Let me see if this link works... bassets.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1081440856

I figured out the best method for this... get a housebroken dog! ;D As much as I despair at missing out on buddy's puppyhood, I am GLAD to not have to deal with that. He has been with us for about a month now (time flies!) and has NEVER -knocking wood as I type this- had an accident in the house! However, he is pretty much at my side 24/7, so it's also easy for me to read the signs. His previous owners said he would do it right in the middle of the floor if he was mad at them for something... You would think he would've done it by now for the whole neuter/shots business I put him through, but I think he just knows we love him too much to hurt him. Or maybe I am lucky and reading too much into it???

I swear...sometimes I think they are simply smarter than us! I had Mowgli & Baloo out for a full hour this morning. I ran to take my daughter to school (literally two blocks away)...and came back to find two pees and a poop in the house. They might as well have screamed... "Don't leave...it's nice outside and we don't WANT to come in...OK...you made us, so here's a couple of presents for you!"
