Greetings to All Basset Lovers!!
We are new to this board and just wanted to say hi to everyone. We live in West Central Illinois with our beautiful boy Milo. He will be 8 in March and is of course the center of our world. He is a tri colored hound and of course we think he is very handsome. I will have my husband send some pics soon because I am pretty much computer illiterate!! Milo is our first basset although I have had dogs all my life. We have had him since he was a few weeks old and I can't imagine having any other breed now. We have considered trying to foster through Guardian Angel Basset Rescue because they are fairly close to us and we have attended the Waddle the past couple of years. We both work full time so we aren't sure if we would have the time for more than one, but we sure love the breed and would like to get more involved with them. Would love to hear from other Basset lovers and if any of you are in our area would love to meet you and your hounds!

Hi Mary and WELCOME! We would love to hear any stories and see pictures of your Milo. My name is Betty and my little houndette is Lillian Margaret. She is 13 weeks old and my first Basset. I just can't believe how wonderfully she has fit into our family and how much we love her. I will never have another breed. If you ever have any advice, questions, or just good old stories about your Basset, please feel free to post.
I look forward to seeing pics!

Hi Mary welcome , I am Harry and I live in Oz we live just east of Melbourne, I have 4 bassets 2 of which are in the show ring Snoopy and his mother Nikki, Snoopys father is called Milo also and he is a top winning basset in oz, Snoopy is following in his fathers footsteps, If you get another basset you will find they keep each other company while you are at work , it no harder to look after 2 as 1 , I have been breeding for over 20 years and have always recommended to people buying a basset to have 2 if they are away all day at work, and it has worked out well in those cases, so if you would like to have another basset I would suggest go right ahead and get one Im sure you would not regret having done so . well again welcome and we will look forward to hearing more about you and your basset. Kind Regards Harry

Welcome, Mary.
Our two hounds, Melvin & Gus, say "Arroo!" to Milo.
Hounds are much like potato chips; you should never stop at just one. ;D

What part of Central Illinois are you from? We're from St. Louis...that isn't toooo far.
I work too...and I can't begin to agree more -- two Bassets are great!
They play together, take naps together, eat together and cry when they are apart. It's like a perptual playmate...and the trouble they get into together is hilarious. Mowgli was really shy when we first brought her home and Baloo has totally changed her personality.
I actually said that I would like to get a rescue...but will have to wait on the third!!

Hi, I am also new to this board. I am looking for advise. Lexie is our first bassett and we chose her becasue we heard such wonderful stories about Basset Hounds. Where did we go wrong? She is almost 4 months old and we are struggling to learn the basic "STUFF" She does her business in the house, in her crate and right in front of us. I have fallen in love with her but I have to say that I am wishing that we had chosen a different breed. Don't get me wrong, I am not giving up on her but would welcome any advise. Thank you--Lexie's desperate mom. www.dogster.com/photos/14975/1.jpg

HI to Mary and Lexie, thanks for the advice, and I am new too. HOpe to here more. My baby is only 8 weeks. She is just getting "talkitive" and potty training is going well here, she tells us most times, and if gone just an hour or two sometimes we use a crate, she likes to chew!!! Juliets mom..Hi again

Hi Lexie's mom, I am new to this board and don't know if you have received any advice on the potyy training issue. We advise our new forever home people to start potty taining all over agin as the hounds usually regress when moved into a new environment. Though yours is not a rescue the issues are the same. Try keeping Lexie in a small area of your home. If she is messing in her crate it is more than likely too large. You can block part of it off. They usually will not mess where they sleep. When she is out of her crate or the small area keep her tethered to you in the house. You will then be more attuned to the last time she went out to pottie. Take her OFTEN. When she does go praise, praise, praise, and praise some more. Give her a treat when she comes back into the house. This will take a lot of patience and persistence on your part, but if you do this on a continual basis she will learn and you will all be happier for it. Bassets are one of the stubborn breeds. Very inteligent, but stubborn to a fault. Hang in there it will get better. Even though my Sadie is 5 and does well during good weather she will NOT go out in the rain. So we fight piddle spots all winter. I tore up my carpet and put in Wilson Art flooring and it has made my life so much easier.
Bassets take unbridled devotion, but offer unconditional love in reutrn.

Thanks for the great advice--we are actually doing much better now. It seems that she had this light buld go off in her little head that said--"Potty Outside"
Welcome and I am looking forward to learning from all you experts.

a few things for you...we were at the kc waddle this weekend and someone from il was there and said they are really short on foster homes. also bassets can be very stubborn. mine would go in the crate and sit in it, or where ever they wanted...then they started getting to know the go outside thing and everything was ok, but they would snean upstairs of downstairs to go out of sight. so we went to walmart and spent 10 on 2 baby gates. now they go right to the door, unless of course the house inspector is there then emma goed poop on carpet right in front of him. also, i will strongly say having 2 bassets together has been great. we have had them together all the time we have had them and it was such a relief, they play with each other so there is not as much time toget bored...idle hands... and emma, who is the more "emotional" of the two wimpers once in a while for no apparent reason except that she wants love. if she starts and momma slave can not instantly attend to her then cloe will start licking her face. i have also found that even for food they will not learn something they do not want to learn...tricks, commands. cloe knows how to sit and sit up. emma knows how to sit. that is it, if i try to introduce new tricks no way...i sit and thats all momma.
