I have been watching dog shows and seeing lots of really beautiful hounds and am getting interested in getting a basset for show. I am not terribly knowledgeable but would love to learn! My Lily does not have show potential and I can see two things that would rule her out even with my untrained eye (a spot on her nose with no pigment and slightly flanged ribs). Any suggestions on finding a good show hound, what to look for when looking at a puppy and how to get started?
Thank you!

HI Betty, if you are interested in dog showing the best thing to do is to go along to a local dog show and find the bassets and make contact with someone who is in your local basset hound club or is a showing breeder, and it would be here that you would be directed to a breeder who would sell you a show puppy, in the meantime get a copy of your basset hound standard, the main points are, must have a straight topline,,Good bone,, good angleation of the front legs,, a good front,,good ribs that go well back,, round apple bum,,there are many other things in the standard but these are main basics you must have,,the best thing is to attend shows and get the details on what goes on locally and join a club, This is my Snoopy , "Australian Champion Merribas Red Baron" He had his Aust Champ Title at 14 months and is a good example of a show basset he has won many in show awards and recently in one day he won,,"Best Exhibit in Group" Best Intermediate in Group" and Best Intermediate in Show" he is still only 20 months old and is already on 250 points, ( 100 points = Champion Title,1000 points = Grand Champion) If you go to my web site you will see some of my present and past show dogs ,,Rosie is Nikkis Mother and Nikki is Snoopys mother,I still show Nikki and Snoopy every week ,Rosie was the 1st Basset female in Aust to gain the title of Aust Grand Champ.Another dog that I had was Buddy he was also a Grand Champ.., There are also some links on my web site that may be of interest. www.merribas.comRegards Harry
