Has anyone here had experience moving to another country with their basset?? I am asking because my hubby has a really good job opportunity in New Zealand that would be for a year and a half, and we're just researching what's involved in bringing a pet there. It's such a long trip and the quarantine is for a MONTH. We wouldn't even consider going without Scully, so either we bring her or we don't go. I tend to think such a huge move would be too traumatic for her, and to even consider it is probably absolutely insane. Any opinions??

I have a friend who moved from here to Hawaii. The quarantine has now been reduced but at the time it was for at least a couple months. Her hound faired very well. I think it was harder on her and her family than on the hound.
Think of it this way. If you had to leave one of your kids for a while to make this move would you??? Hounds are resiliant and will never forget you. Find out all you can on the conditions in which he would be quarantined. I myself would do anything to have my hounds with me.
best of luck sweetie. This CAN work.

Thanks for the input and the info. We don't actually have any 2 legger kids, so Scully is our baby and she's terribly spoiled. We really worry that dragging her halfway across the world to a strange place, only to be separated from us for a month will be too much for a 6-year-old basset. Maybe I'm just an overprotective mommy. All I know is that there's no way in hell I'd EVER leave my furball behind, so if we decide it's not a good idea to drag her there, we're not going either.

That list of info is great for me too. Our baby, Daisy, is 5 months old and we are now living in Portugal. In about a year and a half we will move - maybe back to the US. I knew she could travel, but didn't know all the details.

I just moved here from Hawaii and had many friends there that chose to bring their pet and quaranteen them (it is a month there now too). All of their pets were just fine! They were able to visit them and also the quaranteen facility had volunteers that would go and visit with the animals and pet and walk them. It was a bit stressful but none of my friends there thought it was too much for their pet. Of course, they were all military and didn't really have a choice on taking the job or not...but they all felt it was worth it. You may want to call or try to find info on the net because sometimes with certain vaccines, etc, they will shorten the quaranteen time. Good luck in whatever you decide to do! Scully will love you and be happy either way .

I talked to my vet in germany and he said all of the stress will be ok for her - as long as we are not planning to put her in a plane every week ;D The good thing with Germany is that we will not need the quarantine stuff Any way I have to go home (Germany) for a few weeks next month and for urmeli´s sake I am gonna leave her here with my hubby He ´d better be good to her
