???Earlier this week I submitted a post about an issue I'm having with my 2-year-old basset Loretta wanting to run out my site when we're outside. Its to the point that I don't let her outside unless she's on a leash. She so full of energy and needs some time to run but I dont want her to get lost, or even worse hurt! Since this situation is getting worse, my husband and I have decide to try to get a fence of some kind. A friend of mine in Georgetown Kentucky suggested that we buy an underground fence. She has one for her tiny dog and it works fine but I am wondering if it will work with a 60-70 pound basset. My husband has researched them online and has found a few different brands that don't even have to be installed into the ground. Anyway what I'm needing is a bit of advice of what I should get. If any of you have bassets and have or have tried the underground fence please let me know how it works. I would hate to spend a fortune of something that will not work! We are need advice desperately!!

We couldn't afford to fence our property, so for the past 20 years we have been doing this:
Install an overhead cable with the pulley wheel on it and a cable lead. We ran it from our house to a large tree in the back yard. We put stops on it to prevent them from getting wound around the tree. We started with a wire over head cable, but they are used to them now (we have two, for both dogs, and they do get tangled up sometimes lol) After a while they don't pull so hard, so we replaced the aircraft cable with the wire clothesline which is a lot cheaper. (Replace that every two or three years when it gets worn). So, its a tie out, but with tons of running room, like a fence.
After a while, all the neighbors saw it, and they all use overhead runners too! Just make sure it is tall enough you won't hang someone if they are walking across your yard ...

I've done the exact same thing Dotti Wonderful Suggestion! The "Stops" are a big plus, and you covered everything she needs to know.
I'm with Dotti, They really work great! ! !

My girlfriend who lives in the mountains used a trolley for her hound as well. He got the exercise he needed and she knew he was safe. I am sure this is much cheaper the the under ground fencing. I have had no experience with that and can offer you no other suggestions.

One point I would like to make about underground or electric fenses is that it will not keep out other animals? Not that the cable will either but it is something to think about?

I would also like to add that according to some other people, they say that when a basset or any other dog is on the run, they are known to run through it. I can't say for sure that this is true with bassets but I have seen it happen with my brother-in-laws lab!

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I'll have to do some thinking and planning and find the best place in our yard to try this. We live on 10 acres of land and, we have two large trees in the part of our yard that is cleared. The trees are about 500 feet from the house so I'm wondering if that may be too much room! Thanks so much! I'll let you know how it goes.

Make sure one end of the cable connects bear the house, so you don't have to go outside to hitch 'em up, unless to untangle them lol. ALso, you can run one along the ground, but then you have to take it up every time you mow the lawn.... Dot
