I have read your post and will try to give you some ideas about your basset Lexi, first of all she is only 4 months old and will need a lot of intense patience on your part in potty training, keep in mind that all puppies have to be trained, firstly always take them out immediately they wake up and also straight after they have eaten,or playing,, when she does her business outside give her lots of praise make it fun everytime she does it, when she makes a mistake inside do NOT chastise her but clean up useing a strong disinfectant, all puppies are creatures of habit so it is up to you to make it a habit to go outside the moment she wakes and finish eating, if possible if you are able to install a Doggy door she will soon learn to go outside herself even if it is only into a small outside fenced yard. training is not something that happens quickly it takes a lot of patience and continuety , but they do learn to do their toilet outside, but you must be continually on the job, you may be able to get some other ideas from other members of this board, Good Luck Harry

Thanks Harry for the wonderful information. It seems that in the last few day she has realized that she is to potty outside and not inside. She has even gone and knocked on the door---Yes, I melted. I have fallen in love with my new child and an looking forward to teaching her new tricks. Sit came easy and now we are working on down but what we really need to perfect is quiet. Any suggestions?
Thank you! Penny

Thank you so much Harry for adding your great advice. Any other advice you can add for training would be wonderful as I too am just learning!
To Lexie's mom, as far as teaching her down we learned that at puppy class. What the teacher taught us to do was take a treat in our hand and put our hand down between her feet so that she has to lay down to get to it. As soon as she lays down, say down and give her the treat and praise. She said that this works well with puppies but not necessarily older dogs. It worked extremely well for us and Lily got it in about two or three days. I practice her basic commands with her at least twice a day if not more and now she can do down with just a hand signal. As far as down stay, I don't know if they are old enough yet to learn that (Lily is 4 months) but we are trying little by little. You may want to think about getting into an obedience class. It is so much fun and the pups get a lot of interaction with different people and other dogs which they really need. They really aren't very expensive (ours was $50 for 5 weeks for puppies up to 16 weeks old.) and you can usually get a recommendation from your vet. Just remember that if you do go to training that you have to make sure that the instructor is training in a way that you agree with and feel comfortable with. It is always good to find one that understands the unique character of our sweet houndettes.
Good luck and I look forward to hearing more!
