To all I don't know if I count as a purebreed owner. But am in need of help! I was in the process of trying to find a breeder...We are from the coast but are at msu, I came to get my BSW. While at the park a woman came up with puppies, I knew they looked basset so asked. The woman apparently breeds her two females and they "got loose" and bred with a labador. My daughter of course does not care about "purebreds" and fell in love with a pup. We decided to go ahead and get it. We named her Juliet. While getting the info from the "breeder" she said both of her females had litters. 21 pups to go to good homes. We of course took her to the vet, she was ate up with worms, had "lice" was malnurished, among other things. We ahve a good vet, they kept an eye on her and she is now one Happy Healthy puppy. I just love the basset breed, even if we got a mix. She is wonderful, but the woman who had the pups thats another story, or so I feel. I am responsinle for my animals like babies. I know juliet will be spade at four months to prevent further mixing. I just wonder if the mix may add to the odd health problems that can already arise. And I am glad to see a good site that promotes responsibility. If I don't count as apart of the basset forum thats ok I still love juliet just as much but would appreciate any words of wisdom! And still wish to adopt a "real" Basset later, One pup at a time here!! Thanks To All

Of course you are welcome!!! We are very happy to meet you and hope you can post some pictures soon. There are a lot of really experienced owners here that can offer tons of advice. I am still learning but tend to put my two cents in occasionally anyway . We look forward to hearing all about Juliet and her escapades.

I am also new and I can tell you that there are experienced basset owners on this site---Just one week ago, I was really wondering if I had chosen the right breed but with the help from these guys, I have fallen in love with Lexie.
Wow, I can't imagine what a basset/lab must look like---You will have to post some photos.
I have no idea what type of health issues you may be faced with but I do know that labs are great dogs.
Keep us posted!

Guess there must be a real attraction between bassets and labradors. I've seen lots of mixes with the two breeds. Some people call them "bassadors". There are so many unwanted puppies and too many irresponsible pet owners who don't get their pets neutered or spayed. And from your story, some people should especially not breed their dogs if they don't care for the dog or the puppies properly. I think, especially the males, make for much better pets when they're neutered. Glad to hear you are a responsible pet owner and congratulations on the new puppy. And of course - even half a basset counts as a basset!! She'll probably be the best dog you've ever had!

We would all love for you to stick around and join us Juliette! All Hounds are Welcomed! But if you do stay with us then we mush have Pictures!
I think Holly is right. What you have is a Bassador. You should have nothing to worry about.
Did I see that you are from Mississippi? As in “the Coast” at Mississippi State University? If so that’s great! Me and My Hounds are over here in Ocean Springs.
