I don't remember who said it, but someone said that they feel like their pup isn't interested in listening to them. Well, I would like to share something that our trainer asked us to do on the first day of class.
In order to get your pup to bond with you and seek your approval, you may want to try to hand feed them one of their meals. What I mean is that you sit down and have your pup sitting next to you or in front of you then you feed them one or two pieces of kibble at a time. As you are training you can also incorporate commands if you want to. She explained it to us in a way that made a lot of sense. When you normally feed your dog, they don't realize where the food came from. They don't know that you went to work to earn the money, went to the store to buy the food, etc. All they know is that it comes out of the big bag or box. This is a great way to show them that the food comes from you and for them to "earn" it by paying attention to you or following a command if you would like. I did it for a couple of weeks with just one meal a day and it really helped LIly to pay attention to me when I wanted her to. While I was feeding I would say watch me, and hold a piece of kibble in front of my nose. When she looked at my eyes, I would give her the kibble. Now if I want her attention, I say watch me and she immediately stops what she is doing and looks to me. This works even from across the yard. I have mostly eliminated the kibble but still give her a treat or something every couple of times so that she thinks that maybe this time she will get a treat and will be consistent. Good luck!
