I (almost) NEVER give the hounds table scraps. But for some reason I gave them some left over noodles. Harley? ehh.. not too excited, Hanna? Well she made a PIG out of herself! My GOD that hound loves pasta noodles! (no sauce) It was so cute it was just like "Lady and the Tramp"
what's the weirdest thing your Basset loves to eat?

Stinky poopie diapers.... ;D it has gotten to the point that is how I know my daughter needs a diaper change, when Lily starts licking her butt...LOL. And anything that falls on the floor. She doesn't care what it is, if it is food, she will eat it.

No, actually, I haven't. I am still doing research and wanna make sure I am preparred as I can be before I make that commitment. I know there will be a lot to learn along the way but want to get what info I can before hand. ;D I think I have narrowed down a breeder and am in contact with her quite a bit. I still need to join BHCA, attend a few shows and see what kind of monetary commitment it will be. The breeder I may go with requires that you take a show quality pup to it's championship in a timely manner and I want to be able to do that. Plus I want to get Lily fully potty trained before I get another pup so it may be a while..lol. I will keep you posted on what's going on.

Yes please keep us updated. It sounds like you are really doing your homework. Very good! Have you checked BHCA's breeder list? That may be a great place to look. Keep up the good work! You will do great in the ring with as careful as you're being about buying one! One day after you take "Best in Show" we can all say.. "Hey we know her"!

Hi Betty, Nappy cleaning thats a worry, followed by kisses, thats a bigger worry. I agree with Lonnie ,yep one day you will get best in show and we will all say ,, we know her,,When you start going to shows that is when the learning curve will start, you will learn to interact with your baby , you will learn to stand him correctly, you will learn how to gait him before the judge, at the the same time he is also learning too, and he will look up to you and say,, am I doing it right mom,,, he will be wanting to please you, this is when you will bond more than the usual bonding as you are working and playing together as a team,, you will also learn by watching others in the ring with you, some times you will win your class and sometimes you wont,, My Nikki ( Best Exh in our National) and Snoopy both lost yesterday, That was the judges opinion on the day, so we were all home early. As for cost you only enter shows according to your budget. As for the breeder wanting you to take the puppy through to a champion, thats ok in theory would be nice if you can, the bottom line is if you dont like showing it is your perogative to stop and to be a pet owner only, once you have bought the puppy the ball is in your court as to whether you become a show person, I think you will , however time will tell, it is worth giving it a go, its a lot of fun. Kind Regards Harry.

That is a very good point Harry, about if you decide you don't want to show, you should be able to stop at any time. I will ask her what her policy is on that. I guess she is trying to be careful and make sure that her show pups are going to be shown.
Thank you!

Hi Betty again, I personally woundnt ask the breeder what their policy is I would just go ahead with your plans that you intend to show and you need a good show puppy, you are intending to be positive about showing and will give it a good go, if it dont work out thats bad luck you have at least tried, dont let them know that you have any doughts about showing as they may in that case only give you a 2nd class show puppy, if it was me as the breeder it wouldnt make any difference and it may not make any difference with your breeder either, but in any case I wouldnt raise that point, its up to you. Kind Regards Harry

I haven't said anything to her about that part of it yet. She stated in an email that she wants to make sure he would be shown, etc. I wrote back and said that was fine because I am preparred to do that. My question is, should I be looking at a breeder that REQUIRES this? Or should I look around a bit more. I LOVE their dogs. I think they are really gorgeous.

Hi Betty, No I would keep with this breeder if you feel comfortable dealing with them and you say they have very nice puppies, I have looked at their web site and it does appear they have good stock. Your intentions are that you are going to show a puppy in the show ring and you need a suitable puppy of show quality to start with. If they are able to supply a puppy of show quality and they would like you to continue showing until he is a champ. that is ok , as your intentions at this point of time is just that, if anything changes in the future well we will cross that bridge when when and if any change takes place, in any case you own the puppy and it is your perogative what happens,at this point of time you are going into the dog showing businous, who knows what will happen in the future you can assure the breeder that you have every intention of starting a career in the show ring and providing everything goes as planned that is what is going to happen , you can only do your best, and there is no reason whatsoever that a breeder should not give you what you require if they are not happy with that then look for another breeder who will give you a go, its like taking a new job you hope its going to be what you want , but you dont know until you have had a go, and thats the same in your case and the breeders must understand that. A good breeder should give you every assistance they can, if they want you to show their puppies in the show ring and they know you are new to the businous they should go out of their way to help you all the way to getting started, I would if you wanted one of my babies in oz, as I have done many times, most have worked out ok if they dont thats ok too. Regards Again Harry

Thank you so much for your advice. I do think that she is preparred to help in any way possible and she does know that we are new at this. She also asked me a ton of questions and told me to contact her at any time for any reason so I think that will be a great help. I really do love their dogs and even their pet quality pups are gorgeous. She had lots of tips on grooming and training a show pup. I will be contacting a local member of the BHCA to try to find a local sponsor. Plus I am doing a search in a minute to find some more shows that are fairly close so that I can check them out and talk to some more people. I think I will be ready soon to move forward and will be keeping my fingers crossed that they will have a litter soon with what I am looking for. I am preparred to wait for the right pup to come along.
I am sure I will come up with lots of questions and I want to say thank you again for your patience and help!

Well, today has been a very busy day on my road to the show ring..LOL. I emailed a local BHCA representative to inquire about membership. I also have tracked down four shows in my area that will be taking place in April. They are all breed shows, but Bassets are being entered so I will not only get the chance to see some other breeds at work but also our sweet hounds. I also found two other AKC recognized basset breed clubs in florida and one of them is based really close to us so I contated one of their members as well. I missed their specialty show that was in January, but am keeping my eyes open for the next one. The county kennel club is meeting at our library here in town and I will be attending a meeting with them at the beginning of April. They offer classes in handling your pup for conformation, etc. Hopefully by the end of April, I will be ready to contact the breeder and let her know that I will be ready when a suitable pup comes along.
You are probably right about the fact that things are similar here and in oz. Something for me to think about. Keep the tips coming. You are an invaluable source and a real friend to help me so much.

My friend and I gathered up the kids, our two girls(5) her son 6months and of course baby puppy juliet. I had given my friend the idea to make some homemade teething soft cookies. So she prepared some peanut butter(light on the peanut butter) cookies. She said she Found a quick mix by using jiffy baking mix. Well they not only went over excellent with her Boy, but she gave Juliet one as well. When I kinda looked at her weird for givin the pup a cookie, she said well she's teething too!Needless to say, she LOVED them!!!Juliet that is. We like them too. Of course we had to test taste!
