It was beautiful in Virginia today so we put Lexie outside. Since our yard is not fenced in, we put her on a chain. Not knowing how she would react, we watched from inside the window. She did great---she sniffed, and watched the cars go buy. Since she did so well, we have been thinking about putting up a fence for her. Does anyone have advise on how well underground fencing works with a basset? I have heard from several people that it doesn't work well with larger dogs that they will take the bite and go right through. Any words of wisdom?

Yes my advice is DONT TAKE THE RISK a basset is a very strong scent hound and will fight to get out,, his nose will take charge of his actions, a basset in oz got past a underground fence and died on the road immediately,, on the scent of something, hang the expense build a dog proof fence. Bassets have no road sence.. Regards Harry

Harry is exactly right. I wouldn't chance it. We don't have a fenced yard either and I am just biting the bullet and putting in a regular fence. Besides, it rivals the cost of the electric fence anyway with installation, etc. Oh, and as someone posted on DD, it doesn't keep things out...like kids, or a pet theif or other animals.

Great Advice---I thought that would be what you would say----Although that was not what I was wanting to hear. Thanks for the honesty.
