Well, I think I need a break! Lily has been getting in all sorts of trouble the last couple of days. She has gone in the house 8 times in two days (my fault for not watching her well enough and I paid for it by having to clean it up), shredded my son's playstation game instruction book that he was reading (his fault for leaving it out but no fun for me to find the tiny pieces all over the house), shredded two rolls of paper towels that the cat knocked off of the counter this morning while I was getting Ally up, thrown up on the ottoman (I have no idea why other than she was running around like a maniac right before), tried to get into Ally's high chair while Ally was in it, upset the cat really bad by jumping on his back trying to play (she is lucky he didn't give her a fat nose for that one), and at 6 am, almost pulled me onto my butt chasing a bird during potty time. This doesn't even count all the things that my daughter tried to do. It seems that both of them pick the same days to get into michief. They are true partners in crime.
*sigh* Puppies (two legged and four legged)...Well, it sure is a good thing that she is so cute and I love her so much! I sure hope the rest of today is better or I think I will have to get a sitter and escape for a while tonight!

How happy I am to see that other basset parents are going through the same thing I am. Thanks Betty for opening the door because I need to vent also. I was beginning to think that I wasn't a good mommy. Hold on to your seat and don't laugh too hard----
I have lost two pair of Birkenstocks, a pair of jeans, a remote control--a coffee table, yes I said coffee table to Lexie's teeth. My husband has hit the gound twice while walking her during the snow that we had a few weeks ago due to her chasing squirrels. She pesters the wizz out of my cats, chews anything within reach and has a mind of her own. The worst thing is, we live on about an acre full of trees and evertime we go out to potty, she picks up nuts or twigs and chews them however, I try to catch her before we get inside with them. Well today, I put my fingers in her mouth to dig out what I thought was a nut and guess what---POOP! We carry the bags to pick up her "stuff" so I have no idea where this came from. I thought I would vomit YUCK, YUCK!!
I know what you mean Betty, my husband is taking me out to dinner tonight just to get away. Last week he came home with flowers because he said he thought I was going through post pardum, HA!
I have bought a gentle lead but haven't had a chance to work with her yet, hopefully this weekend. Have any of you tried one?
Even with all the meaness she gets into, I still love my baby. I have learned a lesson, look into her mouth before I reach in.

I'm sorry Penny but I had to laugh! That is so sad. But normal. Lots of people get into Basset because they have that impression of Laid-Back hound that couldn't move a paw if their butt was on fire!
My two where hell on four paws till they hit 2 years old. Now it's gotten so much better!
Well not perfect by all means! If you could have seen me 30 minutes ago trying out their "Brand New Leash with a Splitter" so I could walk 100 lbs instead of just 50 in each hand? Oh god I need an Xray of my shoulder I think it's dislocated now!
Hang in there! It will get better and you will be so happy you stuck it out!

OMG! That was so funny! It is the same sort of things we have been going through...lol. We lost a whole CARPET to our little devil. And I mean a 600 square foot wall to wall carpet that had to be replaced because she wanted to know what was under it..LOL. Thank goodness it is a hard surface now, NO MORE CARPET!
I haven't ever thought about using a gentle lead but then she doesn't drag me about that often. I do have to say that she really is the most layed back puppy that I have known and her spurts of terror don't last long (knock on wood).
Take care!

I'm now the new kid on the block. I have to tell you guys that you are cracking me up. Basset puppies...have we all been through this. The first step with a Basset puppy is never, never give them the run of your house. You should definitely have them in a very small area that is for them with their stuff. Their crate, food, water and some toys. If you have a small area in your kitchen that you can close off with baby gates etc. I found with mine, who is now 5, that if she stayed in a small area she was fine. When I thought that she was improving and listening then I would open up my kitchen to the bigger space. If she went spastic on me she went back into the smaller area. She did spend time in her crate. They do learn and obedience school is a wonderful thing to go to. Unfortunately we do learn how to clean and pick up our houses when we have Basset's. Mine chewed anything that was left out and I lost quite a few really nice things. After 2 1/2 years I took my gates down and she has been fine ever since. Yes, she went to the bathroom everywhere in my kitchen until she figured out where the door was. She actually chewed a hole in my wall. By some miracle this dog listens, obeys her commands but still does a horrible job on the leash. I have a fenced in yard so I don't have to worry about dislocated shoulders. The best money I spent fencing in the yard. I do use the gentle lead and it does work well if you stay with it. Mine is stubborn and rips it off her snoot or just dead stops in the road and won't move. She definitely has a mind of her own. I give her a lot of credit because I also foster the Basset's from the rescue league during the winter months so we always have more than two in the house at a time. Talk about being crazy. Hope a lot of the experience helps you guys. Have fun and love your Basset, it will only get better.

We do obedience with Lily and she actually pretty good at it ;D. My house is super baby/puppy proof so the only stuff that she can destroy (now that the carpet is gone) is anything that the humans leave around..lol. Luckily, she hasn't taken to chewing furniture (knock on wood). She would rather sleep on it than chew it. I have the living area blocked off from every other room in the house at this point so that she can't get in the bedrooms, bathrooms or laundry room. I still have my times with her (see above!) but all in all she is pretty good . Thank you for your advice. I wish I had somewhere small to keep her other than her crate. The laundry room is baby gated and belongs to the cats and the kitchen is really open so can't be blocked off. I don't usually put her in her crate unless I am taking a shower, gone or at night. Most of the time I am in the same general area and can see what she is doing. But sometimes, if I turn my back, she can get away with something! LOL.

Oh, and the carpet was when we were gone for one night and she conned the baby sitter into leaving her out of her crate while she took a nap!! LOL. The sitter learned her lesson on that one. The poor girl was terrified of what was going to happen when we got home...LOL. But we weren't mad at her, we know that Lily is the master of getting her way with the "look"

OMG!! How mortifying!!! I would have DIED! But it is hilarious...especially since I know how you feel..lol. Besides, a sense of humor is mandatory with a Basset and it is nice to know that we all have one. ;D
